 Attitash's Environmental Efforts

This year Attitash is going green. With a new waste management system, enhanced and energy efficiently updated snowmaking system, as well as grooming fleet, Attitash is doing their best to help protect the environment this winter.

Waste Management
With recycling bins now in all lodges, Attitash is creating a green environment where recycling is encouraged.

Snowmaking
With a new air compressor system for this year we can make 20% more snow for the same amount of energy used last year. Not to mention the fact that our fan guns are extremely energy efficient. Fan guns do not require diesel fuel. They also have the ability to produce more snow than a traditional gun because of the design and amount of water that can be introduced and made in to snow. Our large tower guns can convert approx 100 gallons of water per minute in to snow. In roughly 13 hours, that one gun could make 20,000 cubic feet of snow or enough to cover a 200 foot x 200 foot area with 6 inches of snow.

Grooming
With the installation of GPS units in all snowcats, Attitash will make sure to groom efficiently as possible in order decrease the amount of CO2 emissions being produced by all of our snowcats. In addition, snowcats are shut off when not in use, instead of idling in between projects. This decreases fuel consumption as well as the expenditure of CO2 emissions.

Donations to SWAG
This year Attitash donated 100 ski patrol jackets to the National Ski Areas Association's SWAG (Sharing Warmth Around the Globe) program is dedicated to the distribution of retired ski resort uniforms to those in need in cold weather countries throughout the world. Sustainable Slopes Program

Attitash participates in the development and implementation of the National Ski Areas Association’s Sustainable Slopes Environmental Charter - a set of voluntary environmental principles to aid in ski area planning, operations and outreach. The Charter reaffirms the commitment ski areas have in improving environmental performance in all aspects of operations and managing their specific resorts, making possible their continued enjoyment by future generations - true sustainability.
What Skiers, Snowboarders, and Ski Area Guests can do to help:
Follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics when visiting ski areas: Plan ahead and prepare: Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit, prepare for winter weather, and consider off-peak visits when scheduling your trip.
  • Dispose of waste properly: Recycle your glass, plastics, aluminum and paper in appropriate receptacles, which are provided in all food areas. Reuse trail maps on your next visit or recycle them rather than throwing them away. Never throw trash, cigarette butts or other items from lifts.
  • Respect wildlife: In summer and winter, stick to designated trails when hiking and biking to avoid disturbances to vegetation and wildlife.
  • Be considerate of other guests: Respect other guests, protect the quality of their experience, and let nature’s sounds prevail.
  • Carpool with friends and family or use transit to avoid traffic when traveling to and within ski area
  • Turn off the lights when leaving your room and reuse bath towels and linens to help conserve energy and water.
  • Provide feedback and let ski areas know how the can improve their environmental performance.
